Snake plant (Sansevieria, now also known as Dracaena trifasciata) is a tough, low-maintenance beauty that’s perfect for beginners or anyone who forgets to water sometimes. Here's how to keep it looking sharp:
Light: Tolerates everything from low light to bright, indirect light. It’ll grow faster in brighter spots, but it’s one of the best low-light plants out there.
Water: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In general, water every 2–4 weeks depending on the season and light levels. Overwatering is the biggest danger—it's drought-tolerant but hates soggy roots.
Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is totally fine. No special treatment needed.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 60–85°F. Keep it away from cold drafts or freezing temps.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix—cactus or succulent soil works perfectly. You can also mix standard potting soil with sand or perlite.
Fertilizer: Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted cactus or all-purpose fertilizer. Don’t fertilize in fall or winter.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing nausea or mouth irritation.
Bonus: Snake plants also help purify the air a bit, though not enough to replace a good air filter. Want help picking a variety or dividing a crowded one? I’ve got you!
