The vanilla bean orchid (Vanilla planifolia) is a tropical, vining orchid that produces the edible seed pods used to make natural vanilla flavor.

Key Growing Requirements
Light: Bright, indirect, or filtered light. Direct midday sun will scorch the leaves.
Temperature: Warm conditions between 70°F and 90°F (21°C–32°C); it cannot tolerate freezing temperatures and thrives outdoors only in USDA Hardiness Zones 10–12.
Water & Soil: Plant in a porous, fast-draining mix (such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and a bit of soil or sphagnum moss). Keep the media lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
Humidity: High humidity (70% or higher) is ideal. Frequent misting or grouping with other tropical plants helps indoors.
Support: As a vigorous climbing vine that can reach tens of feet in length, it requires a sturdy moss pole, trellis, or wooden structure to anchor its aerial roots.

Flowering and Bean Production
Patience Required: Plants typically need to grow several feet (often 8 to 20+ feet or reach maturity at 3+ years) before they are large enough to flower.
One-Day Blooms: Individual flowers last for only a single day (or just a few hours).
Hand-Pollination: Because the natural insect pollinators (like Melipona bees) are missing outside of its native range, home growers must hand-pollinate the flowers in the morning using a toothpick or small brush.
Harvesting & Curing: If pollinated, the green pods take about 8 to 9 months to mature. Processing them into aromatic brown vanilla beans requires a labor-intensive curing and sweating routine.
